Reverse osmosis is the technology of choice for seawater desalination today. To ensure optimumperformance of SWRO (seawater reverse osmosis) systems, appropriate pretreatment must be selected. While ultrafiltration has been used for many years as pretreatment to reverse osmosis (RO) for industrialapplications, recent advances in ultrafiltration (UF) make this a potential alternative to conventionalpretreatment for SWRO systems. This paper will discuss ultrafiltration membrane systems, their advantages for SWRO pretreatment overmore conventional technologies, and will use pilot data to illustrate the benefits of ultrafiltration. Includes 7 references, figures.
