Membrane chemical cleaning is an integral part of operation for micro- andultrafiltration systems in the water industry and has a significant impact on processoperations. However, this issue has not been adequately addressed primarily for tworeasons: cleaning protocols are typically recommended from membrane manufacturersand some cleaners are proprietary; and, the issues of membrane fouling are poorlyunderstood and related to site-specific water quality issues. As advances in aquaticchemistries and the analytical tools of membrane fouling occur, a broad understanding ofthe interactions between fouling materials and membranes, among fouling materials, andbetween fouling materials and cleaning chemicals becomes possible, although there stillare many gaps in the understanding of the basic chemistry of fouling. This paper willpresent the basic chemistry of membrane fouling and cleaning, physical and chemicalconditions that have significant impacts on cleaning efficiency, and the compatibility ofmembrane materials with different cleaning alternatives. Three case studies will be usedas examples. Includes 26 references, tables, figures.
