The reduction of fouling of a hollow fiber ultrafiltration (UF) membrane via pretreatmentof a synthetic surface water was investigated. The pretreatment mechanism used in the study was the addition of a powdered activated alumina slurry. In addition to determining the efficacy of the slurry in the reduction of fouling, the investigation endeavored to determine the removal efficiency of arsenic in the form of As(III) through sorption onto the surface of the powdered activated alumina. Furthermore, it was an objective of the study to determine the appropriate operating conditions for the system. Variables in the investigation were: membrane molecular weight cut-off (30k daltons versus 100k daltons); influent flow rate (200 mL/min versus 530 mL/min); surface water pH (6.00 and 8.00); and, the total suspended solids concentration in the surface water (15 mg/L versus 100 mg/L). A/G Technology Corporation hollow fiber UF cartridges and a synthetic surface water spiked with 250 ug/L As(III) were used throughout the study. Includes 19 references, figures.
