In 1996 - 1997, Earth Tech Canada was involved in the development of new watersupplies for the Regional Municipality of Sudbury and the Town of Sioux Lookout. In each project, within the requirements of a defined Environmental Assessmentprocess, the available sources of water were identified, the quality of raw waterwas evaluated and the required treatment process was defined. Both municipalitiesare located in Northern Ontario. Because of that, the highest water demand inboth places happens during winter months due to extensive use of bleeders toprevent freeze-up. The Town of Sioux Lookout is located in North-Western part ofOntario, approximately 300 km north of the City of Thunder Bay. The totalyear-round population of the Town is approximately 6,000, and approximately10,000 in the summer. The water demand of the town estimated at 3,800 m 3 /day or1.0 MGD, was served by a pumping station drawing water from a lake. The onlytreatment available was disinfection with chlorine gas. The City of Sudbury is amajor mining and industrial center in Northern Ontario, with a total projectedpopulation of approximately 105,000. Water is supplied from two existing sources:the Wanapitei Water Treatment Plant (WTP) rated at 54,000 m 3 /day (14.3 MGD);and, the David Street WTP rated at 50,000 m 3 /day (13.2 MGD). While theWanapitei plant employs a conventional treatment train, the only treatmentavailable at the David Street plant consists of microstraining and disinfection. The quality of available source water at both locations was typical to thearea--water in small Northern Ontario lakes can be characterized as low turbidity(between 0.5 and 5.0 Nephelometric Turbidity Units or NTU), very low in naturalalkalinity and hardness, relatively high organic content, and elevated color thatranges between 25 and 250 Platinum-Cobalt Units or PCU. This paper discusses theresults of treatability studies conducted for each of these projects. Includes tables.
