This paper will review the unique operational issues of immersed membranesystems, a relatively new approach among membrane technologies. Topics addressedinclude tank design, organic foaming control, intermittent air scour operationsfor energy savings, noise and humidity issues, chemical clean intervals, chemicalclean options both in terms of method and agent, membrane integrity analysis, andgeneral instrumentation and control issues. The review of these topics is basedon first-hand experience of currently operating immersed membrane facilities inOntario just recently built with the latest state-of-the-art equipment availablein the industry. The purpose of the paper is transfer experiences and knowledgeregarding the operation of these facilities to further develop the application ofimmersed membrane technologies for future customers.
