In July 2002 the Intermunicipal Water Company of the Veurne region (I.W.V.A.) has startedthe production of infiltration water for artificial recharge of an unconfined aquifer in dunewater catchment. The source for the production of infiltration water is wastewater effluent; thetechniques are a combination of membrane filtration. The flow scheme of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of Wulpen, operated by Aquafinwho is responsible for all wastewater treatment in Flanders, is as follows: primary settlement;predenitrification; aeration; and finally, a clarifier. To reduce the phosphorous content, iron isdosed at the inlet of the WWTP. The wastewater is mainly domestic.Based on the experience of the pilot tests, the Intermunicipal Water Company of the Veurneregion (I.W.V.A.) chose the following steps to further treat the effluent: microfiltration(MF); cartridge filter; reverse osmosis (RO); and, ultraviolet irradiation. In this water productioncenter, called "Torreele", the produced RO filtrate is mixed with 10% of MF filtrate for partialre-mineralization. This water recharges a sandy unconfined aquifer in an existing watercatchment in the dunes; the residence time of the recharged water in the aquifer is a minimum of40 days. The contract for the technical installation was awarded to the combination SeghersBetter Technology for Water / ZENON. The I.W.V.A. will operate the plant but the contractorsremain responsible during a 10 year period. This paper gives an overview of the full-scale plant and of the first five months of operation. Includes 2 references, tables, figures.
