The objective of the current study is to evaluate potential methods for enhancing direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) fordesalination applications. These methods include: operating at high Reynolds numbers;combining the traditional DCMD configuration with vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) in a single membranecell; and, combining the DCMD/VMD with vacuum also on the feed side. The combination ofDCMD/VMD with vacuum on the feed side is intended to simulate application of vacuum on theentire system. The overall objectives are to evacuate as much air from the pores as possible toreduce resistance to vapor transport in the pores and at the same time to increase the mixing ofthe feed and permeate streams on both sides of the membrane to increase the driving force formass transfer.
