This paper discusses an innovative, fouling-resistant membrane technology for thetreatment of industrial wastewater containing both dissolved and suspended contaminants. AVibratory Shear-Enhanced membrane Process, VSEP, was integrated into a conventionalchemical coagulation process to efficiently remove both dissolved arsenic and particles ofgallium-arsenide (GaAs). Similar challenging waste streams exist in drinking water treatmentsuch as reverse osmosis (RO) reject recovery and filter backwash reclamation. This paper presents the results ofseveral years of system operation at the Freescale Semiconductor facility in Tempe, Arizona, andby corollary, provides insight into possible applications in the drinking water arena. Includes figure.
