Integrating precursor removal economically into an existing small microfiltration (MF) systemhas several challenges. Typically, budgets are limited, and integration must be made withexisting treatment processes. A case study is presented illustrating the options available fordisinfection byproduct (DBP) precursor removal in small MF systems and the engineering issuesthat must be faced for successful integration. Engineering design and operating results arepresented for a small Colorado MF system that recently solved a high DBP problem. Big ElkMeadows, a Community Water System, uses a 50 gpm pressurized MF system to treat waterwith dissolved organic carbon (DOC) between 9 to 13 mg/L. Distribution system Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and haloacetic acids(HAA5) had tested more than 250 ug/L. After considering several options, magnetic ion exchange(MIEX®) was installed as pretreatment to the MF system. Following MIEX® installation,TTHMs and HAA5 dropped to below Stage 2 Disinfection Byproducts Rule (DBPR) limits. Includes 3 references, tables, figures.
