Rumors regarding problems and failures with initial start-up and testing ofmany low pressure membrane systems have been widespread over the past decade.Reported problems of microfiltration (MF)/ultrafiltration (UF) installations have included a broad spectrum of issuesincluding under-sized membrane capacity, membrane fiber breakage, potting failures, hydraulic problems, longer system downtime, under-sized ancillary equipment, membrane integrity testing challenges, higher O&M costs, and various other challenges. This paper surveys a number of MF/UF membrane systems across North America andpresents the findings of the problems that have occurred in the initial stages ofoperation, following startup and testing. This paper also discusses why low-pressureMF/UF membrane systems have had problems in the initial stages of operation, following startup and testing. The paper reviews the results and provides an evaluationof what can be done in the future to limit potential downfalls and pitfalls in membranesystem piloting, design, construction and startup to make sure that when the system isstarted and operated, it meets all requirements set forth during design and systemprocurement.
