This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of biofouling in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) system, thefouling potential of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), andQCM-D technology. Study objectives were to: determine the effects of water chemistry(ionic strength, calcium, and pH) onadherence properties of EPS extractedfrom different locations in HG-MBR system; and, compare adherence properties of EPSextracted from different locations in theHG-MBR and analyze if there is acorrelation with EPS components. Study methodology included:hybrid growth membrane bioreactor (HG-MBR) system;EPS extraction and analysis; and, adherence and physico-chemical characterization of the EPS withQCM-D. Presentation conclusions indicate that: electrostatic repulsion plays a major role in EPSadsorption in which more rigid conformation isformed at higher ionic strength;calcium is specifically interacting with EPSfunctional groups increasing EPS adsorption andrigidity;increasing the pH, EPS becomes more "fluffy",followed by some desorption; and,no correlation was found between the location ofthe EPS in the reactor and its adherenceproperties. Includes table, figures.
