Factors that affect cleaning or an RO system include knowing what the foulant is, choosing the correct cleaning chemical, and using the correct procedure. The effectiveness of cleaning is measured by comparing the membrane's performance after cleaning to its baseline performance, or the performance of the membrane after its first 24-48 hours of operation. Two types of fouling occur: membrane (surface) fouling and feed spacer fouling. Three causes of fouling are scale, biological, and colloidal. The paper gives flow rates and pressures to be used during cleaning, information about staging and pressure vessels, and tips for cleaning.
