Water quality and operational data collected on a custom-designed and built single-stage nanofiltration membrane softening process has been used for modeling purposes. Field determinations of solute mass transfer coefficients were determined to exhibit a normal distribution in relation to solute species charge and molecular weight. Empirical mathematical models have been developed which predict solute mass transfer coefficients as a function of solute charge and molecular weight. The model has been found to be predictive of solute MTCs for two other groundwaters using the same membrane.
