This paper describes a project designed to observe and interpret the effects of membrane fouling on ultrafiltration (UF) performance under various experimental conditions, and to optimize the operating conditions of the filtration system to maintain a higher flux. The authors performed UF of river water using hollow fiber membranes in a crossflow filtration system with frequent membrane backwashing. The effects of membrane materials, operating conditions, and raw water quality on filtration behavior were investigated. The pilot plant for UF performance was also examined by using a large-sized cellulose acetate membrane module.
