Residual aluminum (Al) in treated water has been regulated in Korea since 1995. Since Al is added to raw water as a coagulant during water treatment, the residual Al concentration in treated water is usually greater than that in raw water. Al added as a coagulant rapidly goes through hydrolysis and forms hydroxide flocs. The resulting flocs are then removed by liquid-solid separation following coagulation. Since all dissolved Al should be used during coagulation and all particulate Al should be removed by liquid-solid separation, the residual Al concentration can be used to evaluate water treatment performance. This study utilized such a correlation. A water treatment plant which suffered from high residual Al concentrations in its treated water was monitored for 6 months in order to identify the cause of the high residual Al. Once the cause was identified as inefficient filtration performance the problem was solved by renovating the filters.
