Under the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1986, the USEPA was required to promulgate a regulation to reduce the concentration of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water. Stage I of a two stage process developed to regulate DBPs would set treatment criteria for the removal of total organic carbon (TOC) through a technique termed enhanced coagulation. This treatment technique would focus on providing an incremental increase in natural organic matter (NOM) removal as measured by TOC for systems that provide conventional treatment processes. This paper examines enhanced coagulation at the Wanaque Treatment Plant (WTP) of Wanaque, New Jersey, through the use of pH adjustment and various coagulants such as polyaluminum chloride or alum.
