The pervasiveness of Cryptosporidium in water supplies and problems associated with the use of chlorine, such as the formation of carcinogenic byproducts, have prompted the search for new drinking water treatment technologies. This paper describes INNOVATECH, Inc.'s High Intensity Pulsed Ultraviolet (UV) system which has demonstrated the potential of high intensity pulsed UV from a xenon flash tube to inactivate Cryptosporidium and other waterborne pathogens in a noninvasive, cost effective manner. The paper also discusses the results of over 100 tests conducted with the system on pathogenic organisms.
