It has been reported that the Information Collection Rule cartridge filter method of sample collection can allow over sixty percent of oocysts to pass through the cartridge filter without being collected. Even if it had a more acceptable recovery rate, the cartridge filter method requires specific and expensive equipment and can be very time consuming. Safety during sample collection, especially in severe weather or under rugged conditions, is also a problem. This paper describes an improved grab sampling method for Giardia and Cryptosporidium monitoring. This new method was compared to the cartridge filter method with respect to Giardia and Cryptosporidium detection.
