This paper describes an automatic monitoring system for the continuous monitoring of biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) and other organic matter fractions. The system is comprised of three pairs of bioreactors, a total organic carbon (TOC) meter, a continuous sampler model 500 (Shimadzu), a distribution valve with 6 inlets and 1 outlet, a modem and a printer. The TOC analyzer measures, in a continuous sequence, the non purgeable organic carbon (NPOC) of water samples and the software controls the distribution valve that controls the inflow and outflow samples from the bioreactors to the analyzer. The paper presents system startup data at a treatment plant that utilizes sand filters, ozonation and granular activated carbon filtration.
