This paper describes a micro-solid phase extraction method that has been developed and validated for the quantitative analysis of over 180 compounds including pesticides, herbicides, various adipates and phthalates, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The method requires only 20 mL of sample which is extracted with a 7 mm C18 disk cartridge. The extract is concentrated and 25 uL is injected directly into a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer equipped with a large volume injector. By optimizing the solid phase extraction and instrument operational conditions, the detection limits with this method were found to be in the sub-ppb range. Validation data indicated that a large number of analytes can be effectively eluted from the C18 disk cartridge resulting in sensitivity similar to EPA method 525.2. The micro-solid phase extraction is very cost effective as it allows for the collection of small sample volumes and uses less solvent. This method is also in line with EPA's effort to streamline methodology and provides an affordable pesticide screen for small water systems.
