The unique value of particle counting for drinking water applications lies in its ability to detect individual particles and enumerate those particles according to their sizes. This single particle sensitivity affords tremendous advantage over cloud particle detection techniques like turbidity or particle monitors, as it allows individual particles to be detected and size categorized whenever they occur. However, this sensitivity is of little value if the size and count accuracy cannot be verified. This paper presents procedures and configurations that allow particle counters to be both size and count calibrated or validated on-site, even when mounted in place, thus ensuring proper calibration at the final point of use. A particular technique and equipment configuration are described that allow both size calibration and count validation to be performed on-site, traceable to absolute standards, using either size and count standards or only the more readily available size standards.
