The Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) supplies about 1.8 million people with high purity, unfiltered drinking water from three reservoirs located in protected, mountainous watersheds. In 1994, GVWD initiated a program to upgrade its primary disinfection facilities to provide 3-log inactivation of Giardia cysts. As part of this effort, a 40 liter per minute (Lpm) prototype plant that utilized a high concentration of ozone gas applied to a sidestream was used to determine ozone demand and decay rates in two of the water sources for three seasons of water quality and temperature. The specific objectives of the study were: to determine ozone demand and decay rates for single point addition of high weight percent ozone in oxygen to establish a design ozone dosage for full-scale facilities; to evaluate sidestream ozone injection; and, to evaluate quenching of ozone residual with sodium bisulfate and hydrogen peroxide under natural and elevated pH conditions.
