A highly antigenic extract of the Cryptosporidium oocyst wall was developed and used to induce a strong IgG response in mice. Following fusion of mouse spleen cells with mouse myeloma cells a hybridoma celline secreting a highly specific IgG1 monoclonal antibody (Cry 104) to the walls of Cryptosporidium oocysts was produced. This antibody has a high specificity for oocysts and does not bind to detritus particles in water and is now in routine use for detecting Cryptosporidium in water.
