This paper discusses the initial experiments in an ongoing study to evaluate Cryptosporidium from drinking water using a low flow pilot plant. The initial work focused primarily on the removal through the clarifier system. This investigation included evaluating the removal of Cryptosporidium oocysts and surrogate parameters (turbidity, particle counts and aerobic Endospores) in a flow-through clarifier. This work investigated the effects of alum and ferric chloride coagulants under conventional coagulation conditions. The first phase of experiments is discussed along with relating observed removal of Cryptosporidium oocysts (through the clarifier system) to other measurable parameters.
