The US Environmental Protection Agency Office of Research and Development and Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water have completed a cooperative effort to develop a method suitable for aldehyde monitoring, based on pentafluorobenzylhydroxylamine (PFBHA) derivatization. All of the research involved in the method development is not described in this paper. However, some unique difficulties that were encountered when working with aldehydes during the method development process will be described. Some of the problems, such as background contamination and sample preservation, are associated with aldehydes as a class of compounds, while others are associated with the PFBHA derivatization reaction. This paper presents solutions to some of those problems, addressing the critical aspects of aldehyde analysis, including special sample preservation and handling techniques, and specific quality control measures to help the analyst "avoid the pitfalls".
