The objectives of this paper were to validate the reproducibility of the linear polarization method applied to a heterogeneous metal immersed in potable water, to compare the results obtained with linear polarization with those of a reference method and to evaluate the impact of different corrosion control strategies on corrosion rates. The instruments used were of the AquaCorr type supplied by Armatek Ltd and made by Rohrback Cosasco Systems. Carbon steel was used as the electrode material, since it is more homogeneous than cast iron but still heterogeneous and representative of the ferrous metals found in the distribution system. Filtered water from the Ste.Rose pilot plant was used as the incubation environment. The experiment setup is made up of six reactors. Each reactor is composed of one hermetically sealed plexiglas beaker, two electrodes for corrosion measurement, one pH probe, one propeller and one sampling tap. The propeller ensures constant speed of the water sample. Different corrosion control strategies have been tested. The adjustment of pH was always the last step, after adjusting alkalinity or adding corrosion inhibitors.
