This paper discusses scale and biofilm analysis done by three utilities who collected pipe samples from their distribution systems. Types of pipe, size, and age are given along with sampling and analytical techniques, chemical and physical analyses, and biofilm analyses. From a practical applications perspective, the type of information obtained from the scale and biofilm analyses performed in this study can be used by utilities as part of a larger evaluation of corrosion control impacts, i.e. water quality data evaluations, pipe conditions, and historical water quality and treatment information. Specific applications of these types of analyses are discussed.
