In 1997 the California Department of Health Services developed an ion chromatographic (IC) technique for perchlorate using an AS-5 column. Since that time several new columns have been developed by Dionex, which have better sensitivity and high capacity, including the AS-11 and the newly developed AS-16. This paper details these different methods in a variety of matrices, ranging from low TDS drinking waters to ion exchange brines and soil extracts. Although the precision and accuracy of both the AS-5 and AS-11 columns appears to be comparable, based on extensive matrix spike data, the AS-11 column is much better for higher TDS matrices. Also, the adequacy of the guidelines developed by US Environmental Protection Agency (1997) and the Methods and Data Comparability Board (1998) for evaluating performance based measurement systems can be tested with this methods comparison.
