In response to the growing importance of water reuse and anticipating the valueand need for reclaimed water in the future, the National Water Research Instituteand two cosponsors, the Orange County Water District and Irvine Ranch WaterDistrict, organized a workshop to address the following question: What priorityissues need to be addressed to establish nonpotable water reuse criteria toprotect public health using cost-effective technology? To answer this question, athree-day Nominal Group Technique (NGT) Workshop was held in May 1999 in Pomona,California. The technique aims to build consensus among a group of experts onimportant national and international water resource issues. The 37 invitedworkshop participants included representatives from state and federal agencies,utilities, academia, consulting engineering, and public interest groups. Theworkshop identified and prioritized issues and developed a work plan to implementresolution of the issues through research or other means. The ten most importantissues, as determined by the workshop participants, are described andrecommendations to overcome or resolve each issue are summarized. Includes 3 references, tables.
