The implementation of a wastewater reuse program in El Paso, Texas, is a criticalaspect of the El Paso Water Utilities overall water resources managementstrategy. El Paso receives less than 7 inches of rainfall per year and obtainsthe majority of its water supply from a dwindling aquifer. Thus, the irrigationrequirements for large turf areas are high and the available water supply isdiminishing. Reclaimed water represents a water supply source that must bedeveloped. The potable water in El Paso has a salinity (or TDS) of around 700mg/L. The reclaimed wastewater generated from this potable water has a salinityof around 1,100 mg/L. This paper briefly outlines El Paso's reuse program whichincluded a public education program, assistance with using best managementpractices, a soil survey, and assistance with using reclaimed water in existingirrigation systems.
