High speed pressure transient data loggers were used to monitor the frequency andmagnitude of transient low and negative pressures in distribution systems (DS) associated with both normalsystem operation and operation and maintenance (O&M) activities. Although transient pressures were observed duringstandard system operation (repairs of water main leaks, flushing, hydrant flow tests, pump operation and transmission main repair), the main cause of significant andsustained negative pressures was found to be the closure and repair of a transmissionmain and power failures affecting pump operation. Water quality changes related to theoccurrence of transient low and negative pressures were also assessed but the linkbetween the two was found to be difficult to establish. Includes 11 references, tables, figures.
