The Xeriscape Conversion Study (XCS) is a research investigation implemented by the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) and the Bureau of Reclamation to study the savings potential of xeriscape (low- water use landscape) in landscape conversion programs. One of the XCS scope objectives is to identify sources of variability in savings amongst different study participants at single-family residences. Previous results from the XCS have quantified some of the physical sources of variability such as canopy coverage and irrigation system design. This paper looks at other subtle, sometimes unexpected behavioral, social, and demographic variables associated with differences in xeric area irrigation practices. Principle findings, those most pronounced and relevant, include variability linked to irrigation controller management practices, income level, and behavioral feedback. Secondary correlations between xeric area consumption and attitudes on water waste, where residents are from, and the presence of children are also briefly explored. Includes 12 references, table, figures.
