Faced with increasing water shortage challenges and uncertainties of future water supply, a Beijing-area township has taken an innovative approach to water supply sources. The township is developing a comprehensive integrated water resources plan that will achieve the goal of sustainable development for the township and the surrounding region through efficient use of water resources that are currently available and exploration of untapped sources with minimal environmental impact. Successful implementation of the plan is expected to greatly reduce or entirely eliminate the dependence of future supply upon water from the South-to-North-Transfer Project in the Yangtze River. Includes 8 references, tables.
