The general objective of this investigation was to study the transport of multicomponent electrolyte solutions across high-rejection reverse osmosis membranes. Two thin-film composite membranes with polyamide-type active layers were studied for this purpose. Experiments were performed with small portions of membrane sheet (coupons), and commercial spiral-wound elements containing larger membrane surface areas.
