This paper reports on the results of operating a desalination pilot plant on feed water from San Francisco Bay. Emphasis in this paper is on the reverse osmosis portion of the plant. The overall objectives of the pilot plant study were: determine acceptable pretreatment processes; provide design basis for full-scale plant; provide data on attainable water quality; provide data to facilitate permitting. The pilot study focused on the following aspects of treatment: raw water quality; product water quality; pretreatment processes; RO performance; waste characterization/disposal. A description of the pilot plant equipment and processes include; lamella gravity settler/thickener, Dynasand upflow sand filter, Exxflow Crossflow Microfilter, conventional clarification, ultrafiltration, dual media pressure filters, reverse osmosis system, and analytical instrumentation is presented. Pilot plant pretreatment operation details given include: operating schedule; turbidity and SDI monitoring; and pretreatment results.
