The objective of this paper is to assess the potential benefits that may result from desalination of brackish groundwaters in Southern California. Potential benefits include: 1) supplemental water supply; 2) increased groundwater supply reliability; 3) facilitation of groundwater storage and conjunctive use programs; 4) improved basin management, including restoration of firm yield in some basins previously lost to mineral degradation, and maintenance of high quality groundwater and surface water threatened by the migration of upgradient brackish water; and 5) application of current state-of-the- art viable water treatment processes. The viability and costs of meeting this objective are being developed in an ongoing study. In addition to water supply issues, this paper discusses desalination treatment systems and waste brine disposal.
