The development of various treatment-specific membrane types has increased the viability of membranes to meet today's drinking water problems. The high degree of treatment provided by membrane systems necessitates the need for additional treatment or post-treatment (e.g., degasification, chemical addition, and/or blending with other finished water supplies) of membrane product water. Depending on the method of concentrate disposal, some form of concentrate post-treatment may be necessary. To assist in selecting the appropriate membrane post- treatment, an understanding of the membrane system, including pretreatment and membrane type, and finished water goals must be understood. The post-treatment methodology should include selecting and verifying an appropriate corrosion monitoring technique. This paper discusses post-treatment for corrosion control, disinfection, degasification, and control of volatile organic chemicals. Three case studies illustrate post-treatment options for brackish water, highly colored moderately hard groundwater, and seawater.
