The Greater Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW) provides high quality water to over 900,000 customers residing in Hamilton, Warren and Butler Counties located in southwestern Ohio. As a result of recent expansion activities, the utility will also be providing water to Boone County and Florence in northern Kentucky by early 2003. Water supply sources for the GCWW include the Ohio River, the Great Miami River Buried Valley Aquifer and the Shaker Creek Aquifer. This paper presents a general overview of how the utility manages source water protection at these three different sources of supply. Source water protection efforts are coordinated through the GCWW Water Quality and Treatment Division (WQ&T). WQ&T's principal responsibility is to ensure that all of the three treatment plants are in compliance with federal and state regulations. Over the past 15 years this responsibility has evolved and expanded to include source water protection for it's surface water and two groundwater sources. The paper discusses how the key to successful protection is through extensive regional and municipal cooperation. Includes 4 references, figures.
