This slide presentation outlines a project whose objective was to develop and deploy a water quality monitoring platform upstream from a drinking water intake. The design of the project included these specific goals: to withstand harsh conditions of Ohio River; to provide river access for water quality monitoring probes; to provide sealed and protected compartments for electronics; and, to have no physical connection to shoreline. Design features included: fabricated steel construction; triple "pontoon" hull; 4 sealed "instrument" compartments; 8 river access "payload" compartments; 2 antennae masts; "spud" pole clamp on front; and, solar panels attached to compartment access doors. Results demonstrated that it was possible to perform monitoring upstream from a drinking water intake on a large river, and limitations for remote monitoring lie in the type of probes available for water quality monitoring.
