This paper discusses online remote monitoring (RM) of drinking water treatment systems and how they can be used to constantly monitor the water quality within the treatment and distribution system to reduce the risk of undesireable water quality changes within the system. RM can also potentially reduce the manpower requirements of the treatment system operator(S) by providing the ability to monitor several systems remotely from a "centralized" location. An online RM system consists of a water quality "sampling unit(s)" and an associated "data acquisition" unit(s). The sampling unit contains a variety of instruments that measure the water quality and transmit the information to the data acquisition unit(s) via a communication media. The data acquisition unit(s) are popularly known as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) unit(s). The SCADA units can be programmed to monitor, record and control water treatment/distribution system operation. Includes 4 references, table, figures.
