Ozone and membranes can achieve various levels of disinfection through different mechanisms such as chemical inactivation and physical removal, respectively. The two technologies also differ in terms of water quality impacts, operations, costs, and other important issues. The city of Austin Water & Wastewater Utility conducted a 12-month study to compare ozone and membrane technologies as alternative means for upgrading and increasing the treatment capacity at their three existing lime softening plants while maintaining compliance with existing, proposed, and anticipated drinking water regulations. This paper discusses the water quality, engineering, operations, and economic differences for upgrading and expanding the Albert H. Ullrich Water Treatment Plant with selected ozone, microfiltration, and nanofiltration treatment combinations. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
