A study of 150 groundwater samples from sites in 17 states was undertaken to address the occurrence, infectivity, and identification of viruses in groundwater. All samples were analyzed by conventional cell culture to determine the occurrence of infectious viruses in groundwater sites. Twenty-two samples exhibited cytopathic effect for infectious viruses using BGM cell line. The cell culture harvests were then assayed by RT-PCR for viral detection and identification. The samples were examined using separate primer sets for enterovirus, rotavirus, reovirus, hepatitis A virus, and Norwalk virus. Includes 7 references, tables.
