This study discusses the pros and cons of using liquid sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI) for disinfection systems. The advantages center around risk reduction to operators and remote receptors such as schools and surrounding neighborhoods. Also, using NaOCI in new disinfection systems where emergency scrubber systems are required for gaseous chlorine storage can reduce capital costs. The disadvantages tend to be economic from a material handling and system maintenance perspective. Chemical costs are higher than those for gaseous chlorine. Also, NaOCI tends to degrade during storage under certain conditions. Includes 8 references, table, figures.
