An innovative automated micro solid-phase extraction technology, coupled with large-volume injection (LVI) GC-MS, has been developed for online analysis of semi-volatile organic chemicals in water. This new technology provides several advantages over liquid-liquid extraction and macro solid-phase extraction GC/MS approaches. These include significant cost reduction of sample transportation and storage, chemicals and consumables, waste disposal, and labor hours. Compared with EPA Method 525.2, the developed technology can save 55-80% of costs in sample transportation and preparation, depending on the quantity of samples; greatly improve method accuracy, precision, and sensitivity due to the high degree of automation and online injection capability; and, largely reduce exposure to hazardous solvents and other chemicals due to automated operation and the use of reduced sample and solvent volumes. Includes 18 references, tables.
