In the research reported here, specific growth and carbon removal rates were compared for biofilm developed under low nutrient environments typical of most drinking water systems. Measured parameters for biofilm exposed to free chlorine disinfection were compared to those from a parallel control situation without chlorine. Separate experiments were performed using three primary substrate groups and one mixture, each substrate mix representing a major class of naturally occurring biodegradable organic carbon. Includes 42 references, table.
