  • Biological Manganese Removal for a 26 mgd Water Treatment Plant
  • Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1999
  • Publisher: AWWA

$12.00$24.00

A water source project was established for Lake Havasu City, Arizona, to include a new horizontal collector well, a new manganese removal treatment plant (26 mgd), and corresponding pumping/transmission facilities. As with the existing wells, the new well is high in Mn, ranging from 1.0 to 1.2 mg/L. A pilot plant was commissioned to determine the most cost effective process to remove the Mn to 0.05 mg/L. Five parallel pilot plant studies at the location of a 1,000 gpm test well were conducted to investigate all known Mn removal technologies to evaluate treatment capability and cost. Those processes evaluated included greensand filtration, electromedia filtration, membrane filtration, biological filtration, and ozone combined with automatic backwash filtration units. All water quality testing was either conducted onsite or at a certified lab. Includes figures.
