Recent works at Lehigh University have led to the development of a hybrid sorbent material (polymeric/inorganic) which is ideally suited for removal of trace concentrations of dissolved arsenic from contaminated groundwater and surface water. The new sorbent is very selective toward both As(III) and As(V) species and amenable to efficient regeneration and reuse. The hybrid material is essentially a polymeric cation exchanger within which hydrated submicron hydrated Fe oxide (HFO) particles are despersed inside the gel phase of the exchanger. The material can be synthesized in a simple chemical-thermal process without requiring any environmentally regulated chemicals. Includes 13 references, figures.
