The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) began pilot studies in 1998, with the goals of optimizing the existing treatment processes and to investigatingadvanced technologies for possible future application. An entire year of pilotstudies was dedicated to testing ozone as both a pre-oxidant and a disinfectant. The study investigated the effects of pre-ozone on pretreatment, filtration, anddisinfection byproduct (DBP) formation and the effects of intermediate ozone onDBP formation. The objective of this paper is to summarize the results ofintermediate ozone DBP studies which compared the DBPs formed with intermediateozone and post filtration chlorination to those formed with post filtrationchlorination alone. Includes 8 references, tables, figure.
