The US Environmental Protection Agency has proposed the new radon standards fordrinking water and many groundwater systems will be significantly affected.Although the new radon rule will have an alternative maximum contaminant level(MCL) of 4,000 pCi/L, many utilities, especially those in the private sector, have to comply with the primary MCL of 300 pCi/L to avoid potential toxic tortlitigation. This study was conducted using existing facilities to examine variousimportant issues and treatment processes in complying with the new radon rule, especially with respect to groundwater systems in populated urban areas. Thetopics discussed include: air dispersion modeling and health risk assessment toevaluate potential cancer risks due to radon emissions associated with variousdesign parameters for air stripping facilities; evaluation of the effectivenessof radon removal from packed tower aeration and granular activated carbontreatments; and assessment of radon reduction through reservoir aeration andimpacts of the modification of reservoir inlet configuration. Includes 5 references, tables, figure.
