Backwash water return can have a serious negative impact on conventional water treatmentprocesses, depending on the amount and quality of the returned water. Salt Lake City Public Utilities Department operates three surface water treatment plants all of which utilize conventional treatment and practice backwash water return. All of the plants have minimal facilities for backwash water treatment. The project described in this paper was undertaken for two purposes: to evaluate the negative impact of backwash water return at these plants; and, to optimize the available resources at each plant to mitigate that impact.
